So I'm looking for thoughts on what to do/what is up. I get cramps when I am doing flutter/fly kick or swimming back/free/fly. Sometimes my calves and sometimes the bottoms of my feet cramp up a bit. I think lately I have been slacking off in my kicking because I am a bit afraid of getting cramped up since it is continually occurring when I try kicking faster. Thanks for any thoughts. |

Thanks for all the posts! The goswim article was a good read! It seems like stretching is a good way to alleviate the cramps when I get them. Notably some research I found shows that the electrolyte component isn't a good way to prevent cramps. They only suggest that it can delay the onset. On that topic I make sure to eat plenty of electrolyte containing foods every day so I feel confident that is not the issue. I think I will try giving my calves a little better warmup. I think this is the weakest part of my swimming in general so hopefully I can get used to having nice pointed feet without cramps soon! |

I went ahead and used some speedo training fins (orange) at warmup and I didn't have any cramping issues and kept my feet pointed fairly well it felt like. Although I need to film and see what is actually happening I suppose. Hopefully improving my warmup will continue to help! |

I'd add one more factor contributing to leg cramps: excess caffeine consumption. I too suffer leg cramps usually towards the end of a workout and in the past often ruining a training session. I've tried the many things discussed by others and they help a little. However, greatly reducing my coffee consumption has helped the most. |

Luckily I try to avoid caffeine while training and am fairly successful aside from small amounts in the green tea I consume. |
