Year after year i hear about the set from hell that my school's rival does every Christmas eve. The set always ends with kid vomiting all over that place and practically begging for deaths sweet release. I don't know about you, but this sounds fun to me! My only problem is that i don't know how to set this up. I know that varsity swims the full 100x100s and that the JV swims 100x75s, but what would be a good send off for a set like this? or a good way to split it up so that you're not JUST swimming freestyle? Just in case you need further information:

Why don't you ask your rival team? :-) |

will this set be good to them? |

How about 100 X 100 on 1:30? Alternate free and IM... or alternate five 100s IM and five 100s free... or alternate 2/2. The junior swimmers could do 100 X 75 on 1:30 so that everybody is going on the same sendoff. They could alternate 75 free and 75 back/breast/free. Who wins most of the meets when you swim against the rival school? That could tell you something. If you typically win, then maybe your sets and workouts are a smarter idea for your team. |

Well we're very unfortunate to be rivals with them. before last year, they had won state for several consecutive years. But sadly their high school was split in half and now despite having an athlete 54 in his 100 breast stroke and several swimmers to back him up, they aren't winning anything. |

Also, from what i gather, the fastest lane is able to make every single one of these on a 1.15 and each lane has ten seconds more than the lane up from it. 1.15, 1.25, 1.35, 1.45,1.55, 2.05. Is this healthy? haha. |

We did a set like this last season on New Year's eve, 100 100s on the 100 (seconds, =1:40)

Skip it. Doesn't sound fun to me at all. Boring and worthless, yet very easy for the coach. Perhaps you can give them this set and then go home to spend time with your family? There are many other ways to get kids to work hard, get fit, and actually learn something. Speaking as a club coach, this is the reason kids come back to their club teams sick of swimming and technically-inefficient. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the longest race in high school the 500 free? How about doing something that relates to what they're actually going to be racing? Or maybe you normally do that. Sorry if I sound harsh (which I guess isn't unusual) but we have some lazy high school coaches around here. |

Hate to totally ruin your rant wonderboy, but I'm a high school SWIMMER. Not a coach. And I personally enjoy beastly sets. they help a team bond and relate with each other in a sport that typically involves zero communication. Sets like this also force swimmers to push themselves further than they believed they could because they are striving to with others to achieve an incredible goal. If i was a coach, i certainly would not appreciate the tone of your post. From what i've seen from everyone i swim with, its usually high school swimming that pushes a swimmer to keep going because of the great time they have and the amazing time they drop. you really should watch what you say before you actually offend someone. |

Thanks for the advice Blake, I'll certainly spend zero time heeding your advice. Now son, if you would look back at my post, you will notice that I mentioned my experience with some of the high school coaches in my area. Why you decided to get all bent out of shape about that, I'm not sure but I'll ask you to point out which part of my post you disagree with. Now, I suggest you go do your 100 x 100's, and then come back here to tell me all of the wonderful ways you were able to communicate with your teammates during the set. I personally would like to work for my money. Sue me. |
We are a group of swimmers who swim really fast, and like to help others learn how to reach their competitive potential in the area of professional swimming.
