Have you ever done a triathlon, or do you desire ever doing one?  If so to either, what distance?

Yapp, sprint, olympic and half Ironman - distances. Perhaps when I am done with swimming, I might go back to triathlon... I just have to learn running ;)

never done one, would like to, maybe, one day but it would have to be a short distance. i have a bad ankle and a bad back, so i can't run for more than 10k (my chiropracter told me i shouldn't run at all but whatever...). but for now i'm sticking to swimming in pools. i started doing meets last winter and i love it!

I want to do a triathlon but an old back injury keeps me from running... even a short 5k type of run is totally out of the question unfortunately. Luckily I'd rather be swimming anyways.

Personally... I'd really like to do one, mainly because there are NO expectations for how I'd perform. I'd actually just like to take part to take part, not to necessarily "race". I was in NYC during a marathon weekend, and was very inspired by all the people doing that. Really got me thinking. Then I realized how bad my feet hurt walking out of my way to get to where I needed to go because they had roads roped off for the marathon... kinda made me think again. :)

I know what you mean Glenn, about marathoners...my uncle ran Montreal last year(54 years of age, finished in 4hrs and 6minutes!!), and i ran alongside him for the last 5k, it was really cool to hear everybody on the side encouraging the runners, i can see it being very motivating. but 42.2k is waaaaaayyyyyy too long...ouch...my hats off to all them and the Ironmen and women out there!

You must be joking.....I'll sitck with swimming for now......

Responded Aug 13, 2009 06:25AM

No expectations Glenn? Of course we have expectations; you must be as FIRST out of the water, be in the middle field after cycling and don't finish last after running :D ;)

Never, never, never... man (me) was never meant to get on a bike!

Responded Aug 13, 2009 01:59PM

I have done 2 sprints and 1 Olympic in the past year. I am planning on doing 1/2 Ironman in 2010. My wife who had not done a tri watched my first sprint last year and started doing them. She qualified for 3 world championships this year (after seeing me!) 70.3 Worlds, Duathlon Worlds, and ITU Long Course Triathlon Worlds. My career has not been as impressive! I started my endurance/swimming career as Open water participant 3 years ago and am moving from 2K to 5K distance for first in open water race tonight.

I would love to do one some day!

Responded Aug 13, 2009 06:35PM

LOL. Sprinter. If/when I do one... I'm NOT going to tell you. :) I wanna be 10th out of the water, not get a flat on the bike, and do my best NOT to use a walker on the run. THAT'S my goal!

Responded Aug 13, 2009 11:33PM

yes I did , some class A. I don't like transitions.

Responded Aug 14, 2009 06:26AM

Haha. I wouldn't be a good coach hm? ;)
I like your goals. I have one more for you though: don't sit down when putting your shoes on ;)
I think you would enjoy triathlons.

Responded Aug 16, 2009 02:36AM

I raced triathlons seriously in the early 90's. I was trying to go pro before a bad crash messed up nerves in my hips. I did everything from sprints to halfs with the halfs being my best. All I can say is that the tri community (minus being a bit obsessive about spending money on their sport) are some of the best people I have ever spent time with (much like master's swimmers.) I saw an Olympic race where the 5th and 6th place Pro men were battling the last mile of the run when they both realized they were coming up on a woman who started the race 5 hours before they did. Both men stopped racing to walk the woman across the finish. You don't get people like that in many sports.

This is my third full season doing tris. Swimming is actually my weakest part, though I'm slowly getting better. Doesn't mean I don't enjoy the swim too as I've always enjoyed the water and joined the "Go Swim" group while looking for ways to improve. I've done a good number of sprints (which vary in distance, medaling in some of them), 4 Olympic/International distances, and 3 Half Ironman distances. I hope to do a full Ironman in 2011 or 2012. I've also done two marathons, one ultra marathon fast hike, a good number of century (100-mile) bike rides, and one duathlon. So, I really cover a fair amount of ground in the multisport arena. I hope I can continue for years to come. BTW, I concur with Eric. Tri folks are really a great group and always willing to help.

I swim , bike and run separately at present, but I think my New Years resolution will be do a triathlon next summer. Just need to find one with the rigth distances for me. Individually I can do a 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run easily so I guess combining them would be acheivble without too much extra training. Any opinions?
I might get a few laughs when I turn up with my moutain bike, but hey, maybe I can cut some corners that way :)
When it comes to taking up running, I learnt a lot from Danny Dreyer’s book, ChiRunning. In particular how core body strength and alignment are important in running too, and in particular for me : how to avoid shin splints (cramps).
