maybe kicking with hands in this position to create resistance wich can help to improve kick strength?

he's kicking backstroke with fins (knee comes out of the water though!). he's working on his core strength by not locking the hands and holding them out of the water?!

Kicking with arms placed above head to adjust center of bouyancy forward to minimize leg drag, right?!

It looks like a kick drill we do (borrowed from Richard Quick) which I now call "11" fly kick. With arms in this position, maybe with some forearm out of the water as well, the core seems to get hit a bit harder when kicking fly...I love throwing 25s of this in a long set!

Certainly looks like Richard Quick's kick drill. We call it just 'hands behind' (looking for hands and forearms out of the water). Not tried it on fly but it certainly works the core to keep a good body position

ahhh...now I can see the fin....how did I miss that first (my glasses were not with me, I guess)??....so, then working on core strength would be more appropriate answer....

Yeah i tried doing that last night. I am far too out of shape to kick that much to keep myself from sinking, so there is no doubt those fins are needed haha, although I'm not very buoyant to begin with.

Definitely looks like a balancing challenge. Looks like a good way to get a rigid body while kicking.

I don't think I'm alone in finding this challenging since the boy's body is pretty straight looking and his whole body minus his face is and hands is still underwater!

However, I do not like how his knees are above the surface. I would imagine he is not controlling his kick enough and just kicking lots struggling to stay up and not having each kick be controlled and powerful. The fins definitely make it easier to not sink during this drill, but I think he is losing a bit too much focus on his kick. Maybe shorter fins?

I believe that the coach suggested keeping the hands separated, rather than clasped, simulating how Margaret Hoelzer pushes off the wall swimming backstroke. This swimmer was playing with hand position, from underwater to surfing to plowing. But, what do I know…
